This is very scary!!!

The day before the welfare checks could be cash. The streets in Saint John were quiet.

Was this the calm before the storm?

Where’s everybody I asked Tim Smith while in Saint John.

I soon got my answer.

Many of the poor lined up at this cash stop to cash their monthly check.

Pictures 051

Why can’t someone wait an extra day to cash their check?

Well, there’s a little catch to their madness.

They have to pay the loan Company more than $70.00 to receive the cash money.

Guess who’s the next bully waiting for their money?

You got it!!! The Government with their VLT’S!!!

Pictures 053

I went to almost every downtown bar and every machine was a full swing with a line up.

I wish I had taken a picture of the people in there. It’s very sad!

Pictures 056

The good thing about this story is that the Government received their money back!!!

There???? You should be happy!!!!

I would love to know how many poor people committed suicide after losing their monthly check to the VLT'S???

I guess we'll never know the answer to that emotional question?

You got that one right Charlie this is the norm in Saint John at the end of every month especially if the first falls on a Monday and they get their cheques on a Friday people will go out and pay a percentage to these stores to cash their cheques instead of at the very least going to a large grocery store to pay a small percentage charge on FOOD.

From what I'm told you pay about 26 dollars or 2.4 percent on a seven hundred dollar cheque but that was only from 2 different people

If you want to know about suicides, find the largest locksmith in town. Police forces use locksmiths to open doors to suicides because landlords can't be trusted and they would have to repay any damages they cause opening the door.

Watch your daily newspaper, anytime you see 'suddenly deceased' that's code for 'suicide'.

If you are going to print the stories, don't give the locksmith's name because no doubt the police would switch to a different locksmith service. For anybody else interested, get your keys cut at a locksmith and not canadian tire-they'll tell you some tales!

In a large city of 200,000 you typically get 10 suicides on a 14 day christmas holiday. They also typically do 7 to 8 lockings due to divorces, however, all of these vary by location.

If you want even more interesting stories talk to Molly Maid employees or other maid services, they are booked solid over the holidays, usually for good reason.

Charlie I think it's great that your working this issue to death (vlts) just like your Government is working the addicted players to death, keep it up.

Just one comment - why not go after the loan sharks who take $70 from a welfare person to cash a cheque. Gambling is a personal choice but stealing from the poor is just wrong.

Those cash stores are evil, imagine paying out 2.4% to cash a cheque. And you know it's not the upper-middle class that's using these stores. Without the poor they wouldn't have a business.

Are you kidding me... You are now giving $%#@ to Cheque cashing companies? Why? I agree VLT gambling can be an addiction but come on. Cheque cashing is for the stupid not the poor.

Manitoba first province to regulate in-house security staff

The amended Private Investigators and Security Guards Act comes into effect Jan. 8 and introduces minimum training requirements for all licensed security guards including in-house security guards.

In-house security staff must now meet the same licensing requirements that exist for security guards employed by a security company.

Attorney General Dave Chomiak noted the changes make Manitoba the first province to regulate in-house security staff.

Security guards covered by existing legislation are hired by the company they work for and provide security services at various locations and businesses, as arranged by their employer. In-house security personnel work exclusively for their own employer.

The legislative changes require that licence applicants must submit a criminal record check, child abuse registry check and proof of having completed the security guard training program. Employers of in-house security staff must be registered and licensed employers of private investigators and security guards must now have adequate liability insurance.

The made-in-Manitoba security guard training program is based on a nationally-recognized Canadian General Standards Board security guard training program. The training standards were developed by the Security Industry Standards Advisory Committee, a group of industry representatives brought together by the province to consult on training issues.

The committee's work included extensive consultations with employers of in-house security guards, trainers, police services and interested stakeholders from across Manitoba.

The training program covers such topics as the legal authority for security guards, dealing with the public, professionalism and personal safety. Security guards who can show they have been employed in the security industry for 3,000 hours in the two years before applying for a license, will not have to complete the training and will not have to write an exam. Individuals who do not have this level of work experience but can prove they have previous related employment history as a security guard may be granted an exemption from the training but must pass an exam.

As recommended by the advisory committee, training standards for door staff at Manitoba lounges and nightclubs were implemented by the Manitoba Liquor Control Commission in co-operation with industry.

Cheque cashing companies are not loan sharks. Just because a person doesn't want to wait 12-24 hours to go to a bank, doesn't make the cheque cashing companies criminals. If a person wants to waste money just because they can't wait, then who is to blame? THE PEOPLE WITH THE CHEQUES.

Welfare recipients shouldn't get cheques anyway - they should get vouchers for food, vouchers for electricity, etc. which would cut down on the waste - be it booze, tobacco or gambling.
