New Brunswick's auditor general has not started an investigation into the Caisse Populaire de Shippagan meltdown, despite a call for a third-party probe from the agency responsible for the caisse's oversight.

On April 4, Attorney General T.J. Burke announced in the legislature that he had asked Auditor General Michael Ferguson to investigate the financial problems at the Caisse Populaire de Shippagan that prompted a $60-million bailout package.

But as of Thursday, Ferguson said he has not received an official request from Burke.

"There's nothing to report," said Ferguson, whose office provides objective analysis of government activity. "We're still just business as usual."

Ferguson said Burke's office has not contacted him since April 4, when he received an early-morning phone call regarding a possible investigation. The Auditor General Act allows government to request an inquiry into any person or organization that has received financial assistance from the province, but Ferguson said he's yet to formally receive such a request.

"We can't simply decide we're going to go in and look at the credit unions because I don't have that authority," said Ferguson. "I haven't received any letter."‰"..."‰I haven't heard anything either way."
