The reason that the Irvings do not do anything to you with their logo in your blog is because they are your photographs. You took them in a public place and you own the picture. Your buddy should take some pictures and call them his own and everything will be fine. I must say that I do like the Mr. Burns picture, the greed in his eyes is just perfect!
Taking a picture of something is no guarantee of anything. If that were true people would just take a picture of all kinds of corporate logos, then crop them so they look the same and claim 'but its just a picture'. In fact, the same goes for drawing a character. Whether you draw it or not, and there are good artists out there who can draw as well as the simpsons animators (which is pretty basic drawing), you can still be sued for copyright infringement.
Whether they would bother is another question, however, it's a corporate run world out there, watch where you step. If there are no other sources you should check with Google, because obviously somebody has your phone number.
in this case it would be easy for irving oil to track down the owner of that particular blog. first it was obviously a member of the vocal minority who are protesting the lng and the pipeline. second there are a few hints contained in the blog that point to the owner. hes probably not even aware of them but they are there. listen "around town" and i am sure you will be able to put it together.
