Moncton has long waiting lists for addictions treatment

A staff shortage and growing need for help is causing a crisis in addiction treatment in Moncton, the head of addiction services said Tuesday.

Jean Daigle, the director of Addiction and Community Mental Health Services, said he expects the problem to get worse because the city is growing, unlike other Maritime communities that are shrinking.

He said the different levels of government are going to have to provide more financial assistance.

"We need to do things differently, there's no doubt about that," he said. "I've never shied away from trying different things, but there also needs to be recognition that this is a growing city and we need some help."

People are facing long waiting lists for different kinds of addiction treatment.

"We used to be able to see [people with gambling problems] within seven to 10 working days," said Daigle. "Now we're looking at months."

The centre treats 900 people each year, with an increasing number addicted to pain medication. Daigle said that there are more than 170 people on the waiting list for methadone treatment.

To compound the problem, Daigle said several staff members are on sick leave, and there is no one to replace them. As a result, they've had to close 10 of 20 beds at the facility.
