Chinese university student Doris Yu has had lit fireworks thrown at her, been pelted with eggs and screamed at.

During the latest incident on Monday night, she was hit on the foot with an egg and her friend, Coco Zhao, took one on the head.

As she stood at a bus stop on the corner of Woodhaven Drive and University Avenue in Saint John's North End Tuesday afternoon telling her story to a reporter, it happened again.

It was the third time in as many days but this time it was a verbal assault.

As three young men in a grey Chevrolet pickup truck sped down University Avenue, one of them gestured with an "up yours" sign out the truck window.

His face was contorted with what looked like rage or hate and he screamed something unintelligible at the group that included her friends, Ms. Zhao and Vincent Zhang.

At that point, Ms. Yu began to cry.
"I'm afraid to go out at night," said the third-year business student, tears running down her face.

"If you hadn't been here, they would have thrown more eggs.

"We're here without our families."
When confronted in their pickup truck at a nearby convenience store, the three young men involved in Tuesday afternoon's verbal attack at the bus stop readily admitted it was one of them who had yelled and gestured rudely out the window at the group just minutes before on University Avenue.

The young man couldn't understand what the big deal was, saying that they had done the same thing to someone else earlier that day and that person wasn't even Chinese.

"It was a joke," he said. "Lighten up."
He denied having anything to do with Monday's egg-throwing incidents, which the Saint John City Police are investigating.

Both Kevin Bonner, who is in charge of student services at the University of New Brunswick in Saint John, and Sylvia Sparks, executive director of PRUDE (Pride of Race, Unity, Dignity through Education), are disgusted by what is happening.

"We're very concerned and very upset to hear about it. The international students in the city have generally been very welcomed," said Mr. Bonner.

Ms. Sparks gasped when told of the egg-pelting incident but said she is not shocked.

During an Asian Night hosted by PRUDE this spring, she heard several stories from residents who have experienced discrimination, mostly in the form of comments and dirty looks.

"The city needs a lot of education for this to stop. A lot of people are racist. The sad thing is they don't even know they are," she said.

"We want more people to come here. If these kids are going home and saying to people, 'don't go there, it's racist, it's discriminatory,' how are we ever going to build our population?" she says.

"I can just imagine how degrading it is to them."

She advises Asian students, who tend not to complain, to be more vocal about what is happening to them.

Monday night's egg throwing incident happened about 10 p.m. when a red mini-van, filled with young men and women, drove by, closely followed by a car.

They made one pass, then turned around and came back, pelting eggs all the way.

On Tuesday afternoon, remnants of egg that had run down the bus shelter were stuck to its walls and bits of shell littered the sidewalk.

This is the second time that Ms. Yu has been hit with an egg thrown from a passing vehicle as she walked along University Avenue.

In the fall of 2003, she wasn't so lucky; her face was badly bruised and police officers took her to the hospital for treatment.

Then, just this past Sunday, she and a group of friends were accosted in the parking lot at Tim Hortons by young people screaming at them to go back to China.

About two weeks ago, the friends dodged lit fireworks.

Since posting the incidents on the message board of a Saint John Chinese online community, at least four people have logged on to report similar experiences.

One person talks of being attacked uptown by apple-throwing teens one day last year.

Mr. Zhang guesses that more victims will come forward.

Ms. Zhao is scared and angry. "I don't know what I have done, why they are doing this to me. In China, if they do this to you, it means you have done something bad," she said.

"People say they want a long-term immigration strategy and then they do this," added Ms. Yu.

"I just feel sad. How can I walk down the street by myself?"

LNG Causes Pipeline Leaks - Warning by LngDanger.com
Tim Riley and Hayden Riley, hosts of http://LngDanger.com, and producers of the LNG documentary film: The Risks and Danger of LNG, warn that a new report reveals - LNG causes pipe couplings to shrink and leak.

(PRWEB) July 13, 2005 -- The Washington Post reported on July 7, 2005, “A company-sponsored study, launched after a District Heights house exploded in late March, found that subtle molecular differences in the imported liquefied natural gas the utility began using in August 2003 were drying the rubber seals of aging metal couplings that link sections of pipe.” Prince George's County Executive Jack Johnson said, “he was ‘very alarmed’ that the gas industry knew since 1992 that changes in gas composition could cause couplings to leak.”

“We too, are very concerned that the energy industry knew of this problem, and yet the siting of new and expanded Liquefied Natural Gas importation facilities is moving at a fast-tracked pace,” said Hayden Riley.

“It is time to put the brakes on, and slow down the LNG application process - nationwide - until this troubling report and possible solution is fully examined and fully understood. We don’t want our communities being exposed to dangers of pipeline leaks and explosions from regasified LNG,” said Tim Riley.

The Washington Post further stated, “The frequency of leaks began to soar in late 2003, soon after the company started supplying Prince George's with imported gas, mainly from Trinidad, brought in by tanker through Dominion's Cove Point liquefied natural gas terminal in Calvert County.”

“We are very concerned that the leaks started within six months of the regasified LNG passing through the pipeline system. This shocking revelation proves that LNG’s allegedly innovated and modern technology has many flaws. What also upsets us is that apparently the industry knew about this danger, and nevertheless has failed to disclose this vital information during the nationwide LNG application siting process,” said Hayden Riley.

On July 9, 2005, The Washington Post reported, “The company attributes the leaks to the composition of imported gas, which it has said causes the rubber seals in underground pipe couplings to shrink. Officials hope that by mixing the gas with hexane and pentane -- heavy hydrocarbons lost during the liquefaction process -- or by blending it with domestic supplies, the additives will absorb into the seals, swelling and sealing the couplings.”

Hayden Riley added, “Naturally, the LNG company claims they complied with ‘current standards’ and therefore there is nothing wrong with the gas composition; and further claims there has to be something wrong with the gas company’s pipes. The gas company also claims they complied with ‘current standards.’ So we as bystanders, who face all the risk of their mistakes are relegated to watch their obnoxious finger-pointing game, and suffer injury on top of insult for their lack of responsibility. Clearly, proper standards, when it comes to regasified LNG are not known or high enough.”

“My cell-phone complies with FCC standards, and yet it drops calls all the time. I’m sure the LNG company and the gas company were both complying with ‘current standards.’ Unfortunately, the learning curve requires tragic accidents occur before we recognize when ‘current standards’ are outdated,” said Tim Riley. “California is now considering four LNG importation proposals. California’s pipeline ‘standards’ are as high and adequate as their wishful thinking permits, nevertheless their standard, at this point is purely speculative at best since California has no experience whatsoever in transmitting regasified LNG through a system which faces constant earthquake and seismic activity. LNG is too dangerous for Monday quarterbacking,” Riley added.

According to the Baltimore Sun on July 8, 2005, “‘The breakdown of seals in the couplings of gas pipelines led to about 1,400 gas leaks during the past two years, and has required the company to launch a $144 million project to replace lines and equipment,’ said Tim Sargeant, spokesman for the utility.”

"‘We are experiencing a significant increase in leaks in a 100-square-mile area of Prince George's County,’ Sargeant said. ‘We have not ruled out the possibility of a rate increase in the future,’ to pay for the extensive repairs, he said.”

Hayden Riley suggested that, “Those currently willing to risk residential neighborhoods exploding from regasified LNG leaks in hopes that they might save a few bucks a month on cheaper utility gas prices, now have to take a second look. The alleged price benefits of importing LNG apparently have costly hidden dangers as well.”

Tim Riley concluded, “Higher utility rates for replacement of couplings, pipe repairs and upgrading pipelines damaged by or to accommodate regasified LNG, will inevitably be passed on to consumers who will be forced to pay higher utility costs. Obviously this factor alone makes it clear that LNG will not bring down our utility costs, and to think otherwise is very naïve.”

We respectfully request that you consider and investigate the following vital issue in your review of the BHPB application:

According to ABC News, on July 8, 2005, “… Washington Gas concludes that LNG caused rubber seals within pipe couplings to shrink and leak.”

The Washington Post reported on July 7, 2005, that “A company-sponsored study, launched after a District Heights house exploded in late March, found that subtle molecular differences in the imported liquefied natural gas the utility began using in August 2003 were drying the rubber seals of aging metal couplings that link sections of pipe.” Prince George's County Executive Jack Johnson said, “he was ‘very alarmed’ that the gas industry knew since 1992 that changes in gas composition could cause couplings to leak.”

The Washington Post further stated, “The frequency of leaks began to soar in late 2003, soon after the company started supplying Prince George's with imported gas, mainly from Trinidad, brought in by tanker through Dominion's Cove Point liquefied natural gas terminal in Calvert County.”

On July 9, 2005, The Washington Post also reported, “The company attributes the leaks to the composition of imported gas, which it has said causes the rubber seals in underground pipe couplings to shrink. Officials hope that by mixing the gas with hexane and pentane -- heavy hydrocarbons lost during the liquefaction process -- or by blending it with domestic supplies, the additives will absorb into the seals, swelling and sealing the couplings.”

According to the Baltimore Sun on July 8, 2005, “The breakdown of seals in the couplings of gas pipelines led to about 1,400 gas leaks during the past two years, and has required the company to launch a $144 million project to replace lines and equipment, said Tim Sargeant, spokesman for the utility.”

"‘We are experiencing a significant increase in leaks in a 100-square-mile area of Prince George's County,’ Sargeant said. ‘We have not ruled out the possibility of a rate increase in the future,’ to pay for the extensive repairs, he said.”

We are very concerned that the leaks started within six months of the regasified LNG passing through the pipeline system. This shocking revelation proves that LNG’s allegedly innovated and modern technology has many flaws and other unforeseen problems, which will be even more difficult to discover when dealing with guinea pig projects such as BHP Billiton and Crystal Energy. Discovery of problems with guinea pig projects may unfortunately be too late and at too high a price - caution must dictate.

The possible solutions to LNG causing rubber seals within pipe couplings to shrink and leak now being proffered, such as adding more hydrocarbons into the regasified LNG before it enters the pipe grid have not been contemplated or addressed by the present applicant or its proposed regassification system.

Also the other potential solution proffered, such as blending the regasified LNG with domestic supplies can never be accomplished by the applicant for approximately 22 miles. Their regasified LNG won’t even reach domestic gas to mix with until it travels approximately 22 miles by pipeline.

Until this alarming study prepared by Environ International Corp., is fully examined and fully understood, it is time to fully stop the BHPB LNG application process. We don’t want our communities being exposed to dangers of pipeline leaks and explosions from regasified LNG, especially in the County of Ventura where the pipeline connections will be exposed to the additional stresses caused by the instability of seismic activity, liquefaction and earthquake as most recently predicted by the U.S. Geological Survey submitted with our last comment.

For those willing to risk neighborhoods exploding from regasified LNG leaks in hopes that they might get cheaper gas prices, now have to take a second look. The alleged price benefits of importing LNG apparently have hidden dangers as well. Higher utility rates for replacement of couplings, pipe repairs and upgrading pipelines damaged by or to accommodate regasified LNG, will inevitably be passed on to consumers who will be forced to pay higher utility costs. Obviously this factor alone makes it clear that LNG will not bring down our utility costs.

A QUESTION FROM A READER!!!!

Hey Charles:

Was reading with interest the Telegraph Journal on Saturday concerning the cost of gas at the pumps. In the article on the front page, there is mention of a phone call to the Irving station in Titusville and order to increase the cost at the pump (as other stations had done.)
Is this not the definition of "price fixing"? Is this not illegal?
Do you know someone close to you that could answer this question?

And just to add, while I was camping on Sunday night, we had a fire and were talking as people do at fires. The talk turned to the LNG project and two of my friends (who are Irving employees) stated that they were mailed the facts on the LNG long ago regarding the studies for the safety etc. of the plant. They also said that the facts are available on the Irving Oil website (I haven't checked yet). I was kind of interested in it all until they said that the Telegraph Journal had all the facts in it and alluded to the fact that the TJ gave all the facts etc. At this stage, I just shut my mouth and quickly tried to change the subject.

Keep up the good work,

CITIZEN OF THE WEEK!! < FROM LAST WEEK >

Many of you asked me to have a citizen of the week in this blog! Well? That's what I'm going to do. Here's your citizen of the week from last week! He's Jody Carr because he had the courage to confront a few readers views in this blog!!! What's your view? < I'm afraid to ask that question? >...lol

BERNARD LORD - STOP YOUR WHINNING KID!!! THIS IS THE MAIN REASON YOU KIDS WILL BE DRUGGED TILL OCT 15, 2007!!

WHERE'S ALL THE PROTESTERS IN FRONT OF THE LEGISLATURE???

Yesterday, I saw a picture that I haven’t seen for a very long while.

Charles 04_07_05 014

My Bigot friend Matthew Glenn from the Anglo Society was protesting in front of the Art Gallery because the sign in front of the Gallery is in French first.

glenn

His bigot concern that it should be in English first and Francais below!

Speaking of protesters? Where are all the protesters anyway?

I remember at the beginning at last summer.

Tim Noel set up a tent in front of the Legislature because his disable son was kicked out from a special care home.

noel

This lasted for a few days…..

Weeks later, tents were set up at officer’s Square.

hands

After a few weeks with the help of Mayor Woodside < The Mayor invited the protesters for a boat tour down the Saint John River >

CouncillorWoodside

Afterwards they decided to move into the Centennial building.

cent2

Once there, the issue got ugly while Bonnie O’Dea chained herself in the washroom.

cent

They were evicted from that area and move to the ground of the Legislature but by then they were very much disorganize.

protest1

There were five tents but no one was around too much.

PROTEST AT DOOR!!

One guy even showed up with a very large tent.

One issue that I found funny was that Greco Pizza always dropped over some free pizza.

My God? I never had that during my protest!

Then came the Spice girls who protested against the closure of their youth home in Miramichi.

spice3

My god? Those protesters were determined in their fight but there was a problem.

What do four attractive protesters attract?

spice

Young horny Tom Cats!!! They were all over the place especially at night!

I arrived at the Legislature and I noticed over 20 young guys around the tent.

After a while, I approached them and said- Ok Guys!!! You’re defeating the cause here!! Move on!!!

They quickly replied- Who the f@ck are you anyway???

I told the young mutes that I was the babysitter. Come on now!! Move!!!

While I visited Saint John. Dan Bussieres moved in and took their tent away!

tentbussieres

After Dan ordered the final protesters from the ground of the Legislature.

There has been no more protesters since.

When Tim Smith began his protest. In a matter of seconds the Fredericton Police Forces told Tim that they got orders from Dan Bussieres that no tents are
allowed on the ground of the Legislature.

charlesandtim
tentbussieres

Does this mean that everyone is happy or do New Brunswickers know that protesting is a been waste of time?

I forgot about the clown being evicted from the Legislature.

07061 Balloon Clown

The Acadians did set up a couple of tents over a month ago but this only lasted a few hours.

acaduen
tent

Yes, I guess that I am truly the last of the true protesters.

charles1

I must admit that I do the miss the action and confrontations that happen last summer.

So? All I had was Matthew Glenn to debate with and it was nice to see the bigot again!

glenn2

He’s 72 years old and don’t look like it!

bigotfight

Ok…Time for me to go and see if there’s any tents in front of the Legislature? < Doubt it!! > Bye bye!!!

LONELY, NO FRIENDS AND LOST OF FREEDOM!!!

This will be the last time I will announce a planissue of a program on CNN!

Paula Zahn told the audience a couple of evening ago that the issue of Ritalin will be debated tomorrow evening< last night > I waited and waited but the issue of Ritalin never came.

For this? I am sorry! It won’t happen again!!!! I’ll try to paste the transcript once they debate the issue on CNN!

Well? Yesterday was sort of a huge wake up call for this guy!

JAIL

I’ve been waiting for weeks to write about this issue.

While in Saint John, I receive an email that my roommate < live down the hall from me > was in jail.

I guess he tried to rob a guy at the Super Store. < The victim is a known troublemaker >

Anyway the roommate name < we will only call him Ken > moved in the winter months.

He was quiet and I saw him at the Soup Kitchen on a few occasions. He didn’t say much.

He always wore a black leather Jacket and a baseball cap.

After a few weeks, he began to open up to me and I found him a very nice guy. He told me that he was on probation and there’s no way in the world that he
wanted to go back in jail.

Ken had a little problem with alcohol. Once he drank? His attitude quickly changed. Mind you? He never cause me any trouble whatsoever!

As a matter of fact, I found him to be a very good cook. H would buy huge chicken legs and asked me if I wanted one?

He was also good to my dog – Chico. Once I bought Chico for a visit? He would run into Ken’s room looking for some food.

charles-5

I told Ken on many occasions that he should be like myself? < God help us!!! >

I’m an idiot when I’m sober and I’m still an idiot when I’m drunk! I don’t change! As a matter of fact?

I’m calmer after a few drinks!!

During the cold winter months, Ken would always talk about fishing on the Saint John River.

He was looking forward to the spring and summer months so he could spent some time fishing.

fish

Now we come to the real issue that I’m writing about.

A couple of weeks ago, I received a hand written letter from Ken. He wrote that he was in the Provincial Jail in Saint John.

He also told me that he made a mistake therefore breaking his probation.

Ken asked me for a favor?

He asked if I would contact a friend of his at the Shelter to take over his room?

He would only trust that guy with all his personal belongings.

I should have said - Hey? This is no concern of mine and just throw the letter in the waste Basket.

But that’s not my style and I decided to go at the Shelter. I might add that I had a very difficult time to get through the door but being Charles?

I will not give up!

I finally contacted someone and I was told that the guy wouldn’t be interested taking over Ken’s room.

They also added that they had the key to Ken’s room.

I told the staff member at the Shelter that the caretaker at my place will go inside his room after Midnight and take all his belongings.

They knew the caretaker is a loser so they gave me the keys.

Myself and a friend had to move fast!

We took all the stuff and put it in my little room!

My god? He had lots of items!

So? Now I had a problem? Where do I put all this Junk anyway?

I went to chat with George Piers at the Soup Kitchen and he suggested the John Howard Society.

Charles 04_11_05 019

I walked into the Fredericton Police Department on a Monday and wanted to know the date Ken was to appear in court?

ploice

Mind you? Ever since the Police were called by those racists members of the New Brunswick Human Rights Commisison? > I lost all respect for these people! <
Anti Poverty meeting >

cb-may-18-05-01
sb-rd-cb-may-18-05

Once at the John Howard Society? I met with a guy name - Gordon!

I found the guy very intelligent and he told me that he would meet me at the court house on July 12th at 1:00pm.

You see? This was my concern!

If a guy has no family members or close friends to take care of his items once he cross that line? < break the law > What happens to all his belongings?

drunk

Good question?

Once behind bars, the Justice Department don’t say - Ok? You got 24 hours to take care of your business!!!

So yesterday was the big day and I was hoping that I could meet with Ken so I could discuss the issue of his belongings.

Gordon showed up right on time.< 5 minutes early > but we couldn’t have a meeting with Ken!

We waited in the hallway while many police officers and sheriffs walked by.

I noticed one guy < in his late 40s > being escorted by two police officers with chains in ankles and handcuff!

I decided to go outside for a smoke.

Once in the Court room, Ken came in and sat in the prisoner’s box.

Poor Ken! He looked in bad shape from being behind bars after all these weeks.

JAIL

I waved at him and he waved back. He looked surprise to see me.

I was the only friend in the court room.

It was sad. After an 5 minutes hearing a trial date was set for September 2st! The Judge said that Ken will be remanded in Jail until then!

Ken had his head down and who can blame the poor guy?

His wish to go fishing on the Saint John River during the nice summer months vanished in front of his eyes!

fish

His summer months are going to be spent behind bars!

The police escorted Ken from the Court and I quickly left the court room.

ploice

I noticed two cops escorting Ken in chains.

I shouted - Hi Ken!

He quickly told me that I could keep all his stuff.

The conversation lasted for 10 seconds and that was that!

He was quickly pushed through a door and he was gone!

I spoke to his lawyer of my concerns that he couldn’t chat with me for a few minutes?

The lawyer reminded me that the Police won’t allowed this to happen because often drugs are often exchange during these encounters.

A police officer asked me if I was a friend of Ken?

I told the officer that I was indeed a friend and Ken was a very nice guy!!! It’s too bad that he has to spend the summer in jail so an idiotic mistake?

The cop did admit that he was a nice guy but what can a person do?

If you’re still with me? < I doubt it >

The reason that I decide to write this personal story is that we don’t appreciate our freedom!

Once you cross that thin line from being the socially accepted to the Social outcast?

JAIL

The freedom is done forever!

Even once you get on the streets? You will still be watch by the police Department.

So? What do they say- Hey? We know that we never gave you time to stores your stuff so therefore you have to begin from scratch!!!

drunk

Doesn’t seem fair!!!

Yes, I wish Ken the very best of luck in his future.

Gordon took my email and he told me that he’s going to try to locate someone to store all his belongings.

It’s very sad!

Be very thankful that you have your freedom!!! I know that I am!!!

I’m in a big hurry because I have to attend a court hearing at 1:00pm so excuse the style of this update because it’s going to be a very fast one!

Before I forget?

Ritalin-vicious

The issue of Ritalin will be discuss tonight on CNN!

It will be debated on Paula Zahn program at 9:00pm! < Check your local listing >

Lets see if Charles LeBlanc or those 10,000 citizens who signed my petition knows what he’s talking about?

Maybe Bernard Lord is right in his statement that it’s up to the doctors to prescribed the Ritalin so therefore the drugging and the killing of our children will continue till October 15, 2007!

HANG1

Once Bernard Lord is eliminated off the political map, the issue will be confronted head on by a Liberal Government.

Take a look at the issue of the VLT’S?

People are committing suicide at a high rate.

Lets see what CNN says tonight on this very emotional issue.

VLG-r

Ok…what else? My God?

The citizens of Fredericton are nuts!

There was a few thunder and lighting showers yesterday.

lighting

I was trapped in front of a store and a bureaucrat walked by to escape the rain.

Poor guy? He was forced to listen to me for 20 minutes.

No escape there!!!!..lol

Afterwards, I noticed all the citizens walking around with umbrella in hand.

Over them were trees and at the bottom of the trees on the streets are metal rail bars around the root.

Isn’t this a case for a disaster just waiting to happen?

I heard that there were 60 people who attended the LNG meeting last night but I guess that the guy who showed the video just wanted some money.

Maybe someone out there can explain in this blog their views on the situation?

Ok.....I got to go but check this blog today for more blogs because I got many issues to write about but they will have to wait I guess.

One more thing? There’s one important meeting tonight!

Hail

The Planning Advisory Committee will continue its hearing of the Canaport application (Irving Oil and Repsol YPF) for a variance to the existing SJ By-law. Tuesday July 12th - 6pm in the Council Chambers.

Ok…I got to go!!!!
